Link Strategies
What Linking is
Linking reffers to actively obtaining inbound links to a website from any source on the internet, and is often regarded as the most important form of Search Engine Optimization and therefor Internet Marketing. Note that linking does not refer to the internal linking structure of a website (which is an aspect of website usability, not internet marketing).
Linking is an off-site optimization, due to it being comprised of factors not contained within the website being optimized, and therefor requires communication and cooperation with many different people and websites.
The importance of Linking
The importance of linking is two-fold, as inbound links serve two purposes;
- The most significant purpose of link campaigns is to boost Search Engine Rankings, and is the common reason for implementing linking campaigns.
Inbound links to websites count as a form of "vote" with the Search Engines, and allow the search engines to place greater weight on and trust in your website, making it higher up on the search engine result pages (SERP). To see a real world example of the importance of linking, search for "Click here" in Google, and notice how the top result is a link to install Adobe's Acrobat Reader. This is due to the extremely large volume of websites out there with links to Acrobat Reader reading "Click Here to install acrobat reader".
- The secondary result of linking is establishing links into your website on relevant, highly rated and trafficked websites which are then clicked by people.
Although usually not comparable to the traffic increase from the resulting search engine result boost, Internet users who find these links still generate a significant increase in targeted traffic to your website, and often at a very high conversion rate.
