Terminology


Commonly used terms and phrases:


  1. Bots, or Robots perform automated tasks to save humans the time or energy. The most popular bots on the internet are owned by the three major search engines and browse the internet for new and updated websites and information.
  2. Browser, Web/Internet Browser refers to the programs used to view websites. Common browsers include Internet Explorer and Firefox, and less common browsers include Safari, Opera, and many more.
  3. Convert, or Conversion is the common term for when users complete a valuable task, usually one or several main goals of a website, for example requesting information or services.
  4. Conversion Allowance is the extent to which your websites allows its users to find what they need and convert.
  5. Conversion Ratio is the ratio between the amount of visitors or traffic your website receives to the amount of conversions it receives.
  6. Compatibility refers to websites being accessible across the widest range of browsers and settings.
  7. CPC stands for Cost Per Click, and is a less commonly used term for the most popular form of online advertising.
  8. Crawling, also known as Spidering refers to the process of search engines visiting websites via automated bots and relaying information which is then used for search evaluations and rankings.
  9. Hosting is the common term for providing services online related to websites and email.
  10. Index, or Indexing is a term related to the process in which search engines add websites content to their "list" so that it may be returned as search results
  11. Pay Per Click, often abbreviated PPC and sometimes CPC is a form of online advertising in which the advertiser bids on certain key terms and pays per click advertisements receive.
  12. PPC stands for Pay Per Click, and is the most commonly used term for the most popular form of paid online advertising.
  13. Reliability refers to the stability of a web site. If a website is sometimes not available or runs slowly, it is considered unreliable.
  14. ROI stands for Return on Investment, and is the ratio of money gained or lost on an investment relative to the amount of money invested.
  15. Return on Investment is the ratio of money gained or lost on an investment relative to the amount of money invested.
  16. Search Engines are tools used by internet searches to find what they need. The most popular are Google, Yahoo, and MSN respectively
  17. Search Engine Optimization is the act of permitting search engines to better find, index, and return your website and its pages as search results, so that internet searchers may find it easily and often.
  18. Search Results refer to the links to relevant websites searchers are presented with after searching for key words or phrases on search engines.
  19. Search Systems are systems which utilize the search results of a third party search engine. Basically, search systems often act as search engines however as a search system they do not generate their own results.
  20. SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization, and is commonly used in its place.
  21. Spidering, also known as Crawling refers to the process of search engines visiting websites via automated bots and relaying information which is then used for search evaluations and rankings.
  22. Three Major Search Engines refer to the three leading search engines Google, Yahoo, and MSN, respectively. These three engines essentially provide the rest of the search systems out there with their search results.
